from WOOD WASTE to
BIOCHAR
Biochar is a form of charcoal that is obtained from pyrolysis of biomass. It has many uses e.g. in carbon storage, agricultural soil improvement and filtering applications. Biochar with a high fraction of carbon (>90 %) can also be used in steel industry. Depending on process parameters like used feedstock, process temperature and retention time, the physical- and chemical properties of biochar can vary a lot. When using wood chips from forestry residues, our technology produces biochar with a very high carbon content (>94%)
SYNGAS
When producing
biochar, most of the volatile components of wood evaporate. This results in
formation of wet and tarry pyrolysis gas, containing H2, H2O,
CO, CO2, CH4 and tar.
With Xylo Gas‘
state-of-the-art technology, this hard-to-handle gas is reformed into clean
syngas. The gas composition (~60 % H2 and ~30 % CO) and the absence
of nitrogen and tar makes it a valuable product with wide variety of
applications.
* raw
material for liquid (methanol, SAF) or gaseous (methane) biofuels
* replacement
for natural gas and fuel oil in industrial processes and heating
* fuel
for CHP applications
HEAT
Our integrated biochar and syngas technology also produces heat. In our cold and moist climate, a fraction of the produced heat is needed for drying the fuel before feeding it into the process. By using dry fuel (< 10 % humidity) production of liquid pyrolysis byproducts can be avoided.

During 2014 – 2019 Xylo Gas went through a dense R&D phase of fixed bed co-current gasification technology. Several iterations were built including a semi-automated oxygen fed gasifier. The latest fully automated version produces wood gas that is used for production of heat and power at a manor in south-western Finland.

In Xylo Gas Oy
we develop and deliver bioenergy cleantech solutions.
History
Our story started in the
early 2000s with the development of a wood-gas-powered car by company founder
Fredrik Ek, current CEO. Over two decades, we have delivered wood gasification
systems, as well as burners and flares for various gases to customers in
Finland.
Vision
Our vision is a resource
efficient and carbon negative bioenergy sector - fully utilizing sustainable
forestry residues and waste wood with minimal emissions and biodiversity
impact. In our view, the key is to produce as much value as possible from a
given resource.
Xylo Gas today
With background
in thermal gasification, we recently extended our portfolio into biochar
production. We have combined a pyrolysis concept with indirect gasification in
a novel way. Consequently, we invented our current key product, a clean and
compact state-of-the-art thermal gasification/ biochar process technology. The
technology is now in the phase of a working prototype built in spring 2024.
